A New Era in Planning a Destination Wedding
Artificial intelligence has entered our lives at an incredible speed. What once seemed like a tool for a select few tech enthusiasts is now a go-to resource for any query or doubt. Particularly in the wedding industry, AI has become increasingly popular, with many couples seeking its advice on everything from choosing the perfect venue to creating inspiration boards for their decorations.
The Evolution of AI in Weddings
It’s now commonplace to feed AI images and references to create visual boards. However, just over a year ago, this was considered innovative and revolutionary. I vividly remember our first deliberate use of this resource in early 2024. We were tasked with creating a unique Mandap for a bride who wanted something never seen before. She provided us with several references to guide our work:
- – Without a large tree with wide branches available to hang garlands, create a Mandap with a canopy of greenery and pendants to convey the mood of a tree.
- – Use only natural elements and colors for a perfect union with nature.
- – Include specific flowers and greens, such as banana leaves and fragrant flowers like tuberose, avoiding conventional flowers like roses or lisianthus.
- – Use only green and white colors and their shades.
- – Incorporate elements from Puglia, as the wedding was taking place there, and the bride loved the region’s style.
Challenges and Solutions with AI
It wasn’t easy to satisfy our bride. We tried various approaches, including artificial prickly pears and renting olive trees, until we turned to AI to create realistic mock-ups that aligned with her request. The biggest challenge when working with AI is that creating a pleasing setup or design is not enough.
The project must consider the available space, layout, locally available materials, and, crucially, the budget. AI cannot calculate the cost or determine if a design fits the designated space or complements the rest of the event. This is where human intervention, in this case by the wedding planner, is essential to adjust the project and make it feasible.
From Concept to Reality: The Mandap Project
After several attempts, we approved three projects to present to the bride. Approval from our trusted floral designer was crucial, as wedding planners and designers can provide style guidance, but the florist must assess the structure’s stability, material availability, flower resilience, and more. We must also consider the overall picture to avoid presenting couples with designs that might cause logistical or stylistic issues.
Once we sent three complete projects with floral selections (which left the couple very enthusiastic), one particular design captivated the bride. Not only did it align perfectly with her aesthetic request, but it also featured a distinctive element: the Mandap ceiling was not covered with fabric, as usual, but with an intricate rope design converging at the center to create a focal point. It was truly a unique Mandap, just as the bride had requested.
The Complex Execution and Success
Creating that Mandap was complex, especially the rope ceiling, which was commissioned from a craftsman in Puglia. It took weeks to make, and the weight was considerable—not to mention the cost. It was undoubtedly the most expensive Mandap we’ve created so far, but it was worth it! The couples, parents, guests, and suppliers were all thrilled and amazed by the final result. Conclusion: The Importance of Experience
In this instance, AI was incredibly useful, but we’ve also seen couples send us AI-generated projects that were unfeasible. Sometimes due to structural reasons, but often—very often—due to budget constraints. No matter how beautiful AI ideas may be, it’s crucial to have a critical and realistic eye during the evaluation phase. This is where experienced wedding planners are essential, understanding all the behind-the-scenes work and guiding couples correctly. And, of course, collaborating with skilled floral designers who can accurately assess and then execute projects of this caliber.
